Symbolic to July 8,1853 - When Commodore Matthew Perry opened trade with Japan by docking four "black ships" in Edo Bay to negotiate a treaty. Ironically, the treaty was not really negotiable, which is why a "Tsuru" or crane delicately floats below a towering steam ship. It is now a national symbol of peace.
